One of those things is to setup the frontpage widgets under the slider. In this tutorial we’ll cover the steps!

Step 1: Browse to Widgets

You can find this under Appearance / Widgets.

As you can see on the right side of this page, you can find a place to add widgets (a maximum of 3) in the “Frontpage Top”. Use the “Custom Featured Content widget” to get the same result as in this demo on the frontpage.

You can also place more widgets underneath the “Frontpage Top”, then use “Frontpage Bottom” to place more widgets!

To add a slide to the content slider press the button “Add new”. You will get some formfields like displayed in the screenshot above. To add a picture for a slide, press on “Set featured image” on the right to upload a (new) image. The correct dimension for the image in the slider is 1020×400 pixels. Make sure your images are this size, or it might not look the way you want it to.

You can order the slides by publish date. This means that if you want to have a specific image/slide as first image to show up, you need to alter the publication date. You can find this on the right side, above the update button.

This tutorial covers how to create a menucard and display it in the navigation menu. You can do this tutorial when you already have created at least one product for the menucard, covered in this tutorial.

Step 1: Create a page

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page: “Pages”
You will see a screen like this screenshot:

Now, press on the button “Add New” to make a new page. You will see some formfields to make a new page.

Now give the new page a name like “Menucard” and a little description. In the block “Page Attributes” (on the right side) assign “Menu Card” in the dropdownlist from “Template”. At the “Additional Settings” block you can select the categories you want to show in the menucard, for this example, we check “Pasta” (the one we’ve made in the add a product tutorial) If you want to show more categories check them too. To change the order of the categories, simply drag and drop the checkboxes in the order you want.
Now press the blue “Publish” button to save the page. You now have created a menucard with the category pasta, we now have to display it in the navigation menu.

Step 2: Insert in navigation menu

Now go to the following page: Appearance / Menus

In the block “Pages” select “Menucard” and press the button “Add to Menu”. If you’ve done that, “Menucard” will appear on the right side, in the block “mainmenu”. Now press the blue button “Save Menu”. The menu-item “Menucard” is now visible in your navigation menu!
If you want the categories in the menucard to show up in a dropdown menu, simply drag and drop the categories to the menu, just like we did above. Drag them just under the menucard page, so there is a little bit of space on the left. This will tell wordpress that this page or category is a ‘sub-menu’.

That’s it! You now have your very own menu card!

In this tutorial you will learn how to do that.

Step 1: Browse to menuproperties

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page: Appearance / Menus
The first thing you’ll notice, when you’ve installed the theme (and wordpress) for the first time, is that the theme doesn’t display anything useful.

What you’ll also notice, with most new wordpress installations, is that one page, “About”, is automatically generated. But it won’t display properly in the menu at this moment. (As seen in the picture above)

Step 2: Create the navigation menu

To create our first menu, fill in a name on the right side, in the formfield with the text “Enter menu name here”. For this tutorial, we will name it “mainmenu”. When you have given it a name, press the “Create Menu” button.

You can now select “mainmenu” at the “Theme Locations” block on the left. Press “Save”. This means you’ve assigned your menu to the top bar from the theme (with the yellow stars).

Step 3: Create the first menu-items

Lets create the two menu-items, “Home” and “About”.

Click on “View All” at the “Pages” block to show the pages you can assign for the menu. As you can see, there are two items right now, “Home” and “About”. Click “Select all” so the two items are selected. Now press “Add to Menu” so the two items will appear on the right side. Now click the “Save Menu” button so the items will appear on the frontend.
You now have created your first menu-items for the navigation menu. Before we can add more menu-items like the menucard, we first have to create products and then assign them to a menucard.

This same process will also add images to your gallery items, or put images at the top of your posts.

Step 1: Edit a post

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go edit a post on the following page: “Pages”. For this tutorial, we’ll edit “Product” we’ve made in this tutorial.
You will see a screen like this screenshot:

Now click on “Set featured image” in the “Featured Image” block. You will get an overlay (picture underneath) where you can upload an image. When you’ve uploaded an image, scroll down in the overlay, and press on “Use as featured image” and press on the exit cross.

You’ll probably notice a picture now, in the “Featured Image” block. You’re set now. Press on the blue “Update” button to save the settings. If you browse to your menucard, you will notice a new thumbnail on the left of the product. You’ve set a featured image!

To get a good idea of what shortcodes look like, and what they do, take a look at this page: Shortcodes. Use them to devide your content into smaller columns, or to add lines to seperate paragraphs.

So how do we set up a column? First, decide how big you want your column. On the shortcode page, you can see all the different sizes. Next, place the shortcode in your content. Be sure to close it like in the example below. Closing it means putting a ‘[/column]‘ tag at the end of the column. All the content you want in your column should go between your starting en closing tag.

Shortcode:
[column size="2x1" last="true" title="This is a column shortcode"]
Your content here
[/column]

So what does this all mean?
Size: the size of your column. You can choose between 2×1, 3×1, 3×2, 4×1, 4×3
Title: The title of your column. This is completely optional, so it’s up to you to use it or not.
Last: Only use this if it’s the last column on a row (horizontally). This will prevent it from jumping down the page.

You can also add lines to your content with the following shortcode:

Shortcode:
[line]

Step 1: Browse to The Restaurant Theme settings

Go to your wordpress admin (http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) and go to the following page:
Appearance / The Restaurant themesettings / custom sidebars

First browse to the widget page that you can find under “Appareance / Widgets”. Here you can add a new sidebar for pages. When you have added a new sidebar, you can browse to: Appearance / Widgets
On the right side you will see your new added sidebar(s).

Add widgets to the frontpage area

On the right side of your widget page (Appearance / Widgets) you can also find the sidebar “Frontpage” on the right side of the screen. This is the area where you can drag widgets to which should appear on the frontpage. We’ve designed this area with three widgets in mind.
To activate the frontpage widget area, go to the theme settings: Appearance / The Restaurant theme settings. Click the tab ‘Frontpage’, and scroll down untill you see the option ‘Widget area options’. Click the dropdown and select ‘Frontpage widget area’ or ‘Both’ depending on what you want. This will activate the widgets on the frontpage.

In this tutorial we’ll cover how to change settings of the frontpage of your restaurant theme. You will learn how to use the slider and how to fill in the widgets.

Step 1: Browse to The Restaurant Theme settings

The frontpage settings cover things like the slider and the content widgets on the frontpage.
You can find these settings under the tab “Frontpage” of the Restaurant theme settings.

Edit the contentslider

Normally, the content slider is only shown on the frontpage, but it can be unfolded on every page by the user. To keep it unfolded on every page in the theme, select the option ‘Show only on frontpage’ in the dropdown list. To add slides follow the tutorial about adding slides.

Edit the frontpage widgets

You can set different types of widget views for the frontpage. In the first dropdownlist “Widget area options” you can select which type you want to set. These are: “Three text blocks (see options below)”, ” Frontpage widget area” and “Both”. This last option displays two blocks, one with the red flaps and one area you can add widgets to, how to do this we will explain later.
The three content widgets on the frontpage are easy to set up. Simply specify the title, image, text and read more link and you’re done.

Keep in mind that adding an image is optional, though it would look better if all three widgets have either an image, or not at all (due to alignment of the text). The read more link is also optional. Simply go to the page or post you want to link to, and copy/paste the adres from the adressbar from your browser. Don’t forget to setup all three widgets, or the frontpage won’t look the way you want it to!
Don’t forget to press on the “save changes” button to save all your settings!

Add widgets to the frontpage area

First browse to the widget page that you can find under “Appareance / Widgets”.

On the right side you can find “Frontpage”. This is the area where you can drag widgets to.
